This is a very provocative and insightful essay. I have a couple of comments that might help with your final draft. Since you employ Rostow’s “taking off” as a means to consider what scholars mean by the term “modern” it might be useful to provide a consideration of how world historians have grappled with the transition between traditional and modern societies. Such an analysis would help address a question left unaddressed by your essay; is the “interconnected world” something unique to bloggers on Early Modern issues or is it now a more commonplace trend. Lastly, I would suggest you look at the work of Atlantic historians on the role of bureaucracies in creating modern societies (I’m thinking of Kenneth Morgan and the recent work of USC’s Nathan Perl-Rosenthal).
